Paddling

Waikiki Yacht Club’s Outrigger Canoe Team has had a great start to the regatta season. The team placed first place in the Single A Division at both the Manu o Ke Kai regatta in Haleiwa and at the Kalihi Kai Regatta at Keehi Lagoon, and second place in the Windward Kai Regatta.

Coaches are actively seeking athletes with or without paddling experience to join the  program and race in the next few weeks. Age is not an obstacle. Our oldest paddler is 78, and our youngest is 9. We have a terrific junior program!

“We are a true team with terrific spirit, great energy and paddlers and coaches who support one another,” said Head Coach Malia Zimmerman. “Everyone - coaches, parents, paddlers and support people - step up to help make the team successful.”

WYC Outrigger Paddling is launching its new Manini Paddling program, welcoming keiki 8–12 years old into the exciting world of outrigger canoe paddling! Keiki will learn the basics of canoe paddling while gaining respect for the ocean, understanding water safety, and connecting to the cultural traditions of paddling. Along the way, they will build strength, confidence, and friendships that last beyond the season. Spots are limited to 12 keiki. To apply, email Head Coach Malia Zimmerman at [email protected]

Paddling FAQs

No, members of the Waikiki Yacht Club may participate in the paddling program without additional cost.

Yes. Non-members may participate as a guest of one of the current members.

For racing, the Club paddlers typically wear team jerseys. Jerseys are custom ordered each year. They generally cost around $30 per person. Neoprene paddling shorts are also recommended for your comfort and safety. Shorts may be purchased through local retailers such as Island Paddler and Excel.

Regular Paddles are $150–350. This varies depending on the number and type of paddle you buy. The goal for each paddler should be to own their own paddle.

Suggested basics for practice:

  • PADDLE: Participants should bring their own paddle.
  • DRINK: Please bring a small bottle of water or sports drink.
  • A DRY T-SHIRT: A dry towel and a T-shirt or sweatshirt are recommended for after practice. As a member of WYC, locker room facilities are available for changing.
  • SUNSCREEN: Sunscreen is recommended for daytime participants.
  • NEOPRENE: Neoprene shorts are recommended because they cushion the hard seats of the canoe and minimize chafing.
