Sailing Classes

We are very fortunate to have Mr. Hideki Hayashi at the helm as our Rear Commodore for Sail in 2017. He teams well with Mr. Todd Wyrick, our Race Committee Chairman and Mr. Dane Alden our Cal-20 Program Chairman. With this great program maybe it’s time for you to join the fun on the water. First you might want to check out the club’s web page where you can ask for a ride as crew on a sailboat. Get a little experience and you may find you want more.

Sign up for a lesson on the club’s Cal 20. Our Cal 20 Chairman, Dane Alden, is happy to work with you to provide a custom program or a single lesson to get your feet wet. The cost is surprisingly reasonable and is best discussed with Mr. Alden as he can join interested parties to bring the cost down further. Drop Dane an email at dalden@hawaii.edi

The Cal 20 is one of the most popular small keelboats ever built.  When you are ready one can be purchased locally for under $5,000 ready to go.  At current rates a slip is $100 a month and it appears there is no wait. And then the sky is the limit.

One of our prominent members, Mr. Yang Suh, took a lesson a few years ago never having sailed. He was shopping for a power boat as it seemed to him there was less involved.  However after lessons he decided on a Cal 30 sailboat as his next step up the boating chain.  After getting comfortable navigating in and out of his slip and up to Diamond Head it was time to shop for a bigger boat.  He fell in love with a sweet ride by the name of Stardust, a 47 footer.

2017 will be the year of the sailing race at WYC. If you have anything with sails please join in. So boat owners please tell Hayashi or Dane if you need additional crew members and crews tell them you want a ride. Let’s all get together and have a super fun 2017 on the water at the Waikiki Yacht Club.

Going “green” is the latest buzzword and one way to do it is by learning the ancient and pollution-free activity of sailing. And, of course, the Waikiki Yacht Club, with its individual and group sailing classes, is the perfect place to learn. The club’s basic sailing program is a 12-hour course, consisting of four three-hour lessons on the water off Waikiki, Diamond Head, and Hawaii Kai. Topics covered in these classes include: seamanship, terminology, knot-tying, rules of the road, navigation, and boat maintenance.

WYC membership is not required to enroll in these classes and the instruction fee for groups of up to four students starts at $25 an hour. Individual instruction fees start at $35 an hour.

More information, registration forms, and updates on current special offers are available from WYC Sailing Coach Guy Fleming at the WYC business office by calling 808-955-4405.
